Ronald Reagan became known as the “Teflon President” in the 1980s — a term coined by the late Democratic member of the US House of Representatives and feminist icon Pat Schroeder (D-CO).
Reagan could do no wrong in the eyes of his many political supporters.
When it comes to morality and Donald Trump, one would think that Evangelical Christians would be mortified by his behavior not just in recent years but going back several decades.
You couldn’t be more wrong. An article published today details the calculations made by Christian fundamentalists in their acceptance of vulgar, immoral, and criminal activities by Trump.
A 2023 survey by PRRI revealed the following preferences of various religious groups for the 2024 election.
It seems like there is a direct relationship between the level of outrageous behavior displayed by Trump and his popularity in conservative circles. The more shocking the revelations about him, the tighter the political embrace by his diehard supporters — not unlike Reagan in many respects.
Unlike anyone in recent years, Trump has been the savior for Christian fundamentalists on several social issues. And that, according to a prominent evangelical author, makes him “Christian enough.”
He Has No Shame
Trump may have sinned, but evangelicals still admire his masculinity and power.
He’s been found liable for committing sexual abuse. He’s bragged about grabbing women by the you-know-what. He’s in the middle of a court case over paying hush money to a porn star with whom he allegedly cheated on his wife — the third woman he’s married. And he’s the de facto leader of American evangelicalism.
How could Christians embrace a leader who has seemingly treated half the “thou shalt nots” in the Bible as a challenge? The typical answer is that it’s a matter of political convenience. Donald Trump may not be a choir boy, the conventional wisdom suggests, but he offers Christians wins on socially conservative policies, and he appointed Supreme Court justices who delivered for evangelicals by overturning Roe v. Wade. But anyone who’s so much as set foot in an evangelical church over the last eight years knows that Christians don’t describe Trump as an unfortunate necessity, but a literal God-send. Political convenience alone doesn’t explain that.
Read this excerpt and interview with Samuel L. Perry, a sociologist of religion who has written several books on conservative Christianity including Addicted to Lust: Pornography in the Lives of Conservative Protestants”
“Look at the way he talks, look at the way he reacts to people. Has he ever confessed sins? Anything? They would probably say no. But he fights for our values. And honestly, that makes him Christian enough.”

Could He Win in 2024?
Gagged
Stormy Daniels’ testimony earlier today upset Trump to the point where he appeared to have uttered an expletive.
Maggie Haberman: “Trump has often had his eyes closed during uncomfortable moments of testimony in this trial. So far during this testimony, he is keeping them open.”
But then: “As Stormy Daniels details her adult film career, Trump leans back and closes his eyes.”
Ben Feuerherd: “Trump appears to be very upset about having to sit through Daniels’ testimony. When the porn star said Trump told her that he and his wife Melania don’t sleep in the same bed anymore, the former president shook his head. When Daniels told jurors that she ‘swatted’ Trump on the backside with a magazine during their encounter in Lake Tahoe, he appeared to mouth ‘bullshit.’”
